Senior  Page

Dear Parent or Guardian:

After many years of hard work and commitment, your son or daughter has reached a goal set many years ago – that of becoming a Senior at Headland High School. As dedicated and supportive parents or guardians you have played an important role in helping this young man or woman reach this point. We look forward to working with you to make this year a very productive and memorable one in the life of your “Senior.”

We would like to take this opportunity to inform you of some very important dates and projected expenses for the upcoming year. Please place these dates on your calendar so there will be no unexpected conflicts, especially for graduation practice in May. How to get an athletic scholarship

In order to be considered for an athletic scholarship, you need to have exceptional talent in a particular sport. Remember, only 1 to 2 percent of high school athletes qualify for athletic scholarships. You need to evaluate your athletic ability to help identify the collegiate level at which you will be most successful. Also, it is in your best interest to have a good relationship and communicate frequently with your current coach. College coaches will contact your coach. In order to be considered you should be involved in either club sports or high school team sports. You will need to decide:

1. Which level of competition you are eligible for? NCAA Division I, II, III or NAIA;

2. Which schools (at that level) you are interested in attending?

The different divisions of sports have different requirements and different allocations of athletic scholarship money. You need to check with each coach, in each sport, in each school, to discover what athletic positions are being recruited and what scholarship money is available for you the year you will be applying. In order to be recruited you need to register with the NCAA Clearinghouse at the end of your junior year. Applications require you to fill out the registration form online at http://www.ncaaclearinghouse.net/ncaa/NCAA/common/index.html , send official transcripts, and your SAT or ACT test scores directly to the Clearinghouse from ACT or SAT testing service. There is a fee to process your registration

BEWARE of SCHOLARSHIP SCAMS: Do not pay someone to help find scholarships for you. These services typically take your money and you receive very little help in your scholarship search.      Tips:

    Remember: The first step in preparing for your future is to explore your career options. Look for a career that revolves around activities you enjoy. Then, if education beyond high school is required, look for colleges/universities or technical schools that prepare you for your career choice. Visit as many of the college campuses as you can. Be sure to get prior approval from an administrator before you are absent from school.

    Don't Delay! Apply for admission now if you plan to attend a major college or university! Submitting an application for admission is a prerequisite for academic scholarship consideration. Campus housing often fills up early in your senior year. It is extremely important to apply now and send your deposit to save your place if you are accepted.

    ACT or SAT? It is important that college-bound seniors have a competitive ACT or SAT1 score before December 1st of their senior year. ACT encourages registration online, see the link at top of page. SAT also encourages registration online, see the link at top of page. Most colleges accept either ACT or SAT1, contact the college admissions office to find out which is accepted.
